Webinar Description

Multiculturally competent wellness professionals must acquire the skills and knowledge as well as develop cultural humility/empathy required to engage individuals from walks of life different from their own. This is necessary to establish empowering relationships with clients and to work together to create the partnership required to achieve wellness. This webinar will describe how the cultural needs and contributions of all the groups in a society must play a central role in the design or strategy of any effective and impactful wellness program. Webinar participants will learn how to build a sense of community by establishing meaningful and trusting relationships that show they respect each person’s cultural practices and values and not judge and validate them by comparing them to our own. Participants will be made aware of the steps to address the critical need for wellness professionals to become multiculturally aware and competent to effectively work in partnership with diverse populations in society, with special attention given to those who have been ignored in the past, if wellness is to be achieved and/or maintained.

Objectives

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • define the difference between equity and equality and the obstacles to achieving equity.
  • describe the role multicultural competence plays in building community, establishing trusting relationships and addressing wellness needs of diverse populations.
  • list at least six strategies to improve multicultural competence and enhance wellness programming.
