Webinar Description
A growing body of evidence supports what many individuals and health promotion organizations have already discovered: traditional interventions designed to address eating, physical activity, and weight are ineffective for creating sustainable changes in weight or health. Further, it is becoming clear that the focus on weight and restrictive strategies is not only ineffective, but harmful to well-being over time, as it contributes to disordered eating, weight cycling and other unhealthy outcomes that are often confounded with weight and chronic diseases.

This session will examine the complex bio-psycho-social reasons why traditional approaches to eating and weight management fail and lay the foundation for a non-diet, weight-neutral, mindfulness-based approach to both. We will explore the evidence surrounding the need for a paradigm shift and discuss a powerful, universal approach to issues contributing to problematic eating behaviors and physical inactivity. Participants will be introduced to six unconventional strategies for promoting a mindful relationship with food and activity that supports optimal well-being.

Objectives
Following this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • identify three ways that traditional weight-focused and rules-based interventions are ineffective.
  • define three key tenets of an emerging paradigm-shift in eating and weight related interventions.
  • identify the six crucial decision points in the Mindful Eating Cycle.
