Motivational Interviewing & Health Behavior Change:
An Advanced Training

Steven Berg-Smith Presenter: Steven Berg-Smith, MS, CWP
Dates: Saturday, July 17 - Monday, July 19, 2010
Time: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Program Description
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a state-of-the-art, evidence-based communication and counseling approach for building and strengthening intrinsic motivation for positive health behavior change in brief clinical encounters. Generally recognized as a practical, common sense approach, becoming proficient in MI, however, is an on-going learning process requiring significant training, practice, and feedback/supervision. This advanced workshop is designed for individuals who have completed introductory training in MI, and have experience using this method in an applied setting. The workshop will focus primarily on the use of MI in health care settings, including applications to health promotion and wellness. As a participant, you will be guided through a sequence of learning activities to move from basic competence to more advanced clinical skillfulness in your own areas of work. Learning activities will include: real-life demonstrations, videotape examples, "real-plays," case studies, small group exercises, and significant participant practice with feedback.

Objectives
Participants will:

  1. be able to describe the "spirit" and key principles of a guiding, person-centered counseling style
  2. observe and debrief demonstrations and DVD examples of MI
  3. be able to demonstrate and practice advance skills and strategies of MI (e.g., strategic reflective listening, rolling with resistance, eliciting change talk, developing discrepancy, mobilizing core values, transitioning from phase 1 to phase 2)
  4. receive individual feedback in MI practice behavior
  5. be able to develop a personal plan for enhancing confidence and competence in applying MI into clinical practice
